Business Services Director

Be part of something big
(and a little bit magical)

The Empire isn’t just a theatre, it’s an experience, a destination, and the beating heart of Toowoomba’s arts scene.

This is a new role, created to lift the maturity of the corporate functions and help The Empire grow sustainably, without losing what makes them special. You’ll work closely with the CEO and Board, driving financial sustainability, operational excellence, and strong governance, all while keeping the creative spirit of The Empire front and centre.

Why you’ll love it

The Empire is proudly managed on behalf of the Toowoomba Regional Council, and blends rich heritage with a bold vision for the future. With around $6M in annual revenue, they are big enough to make an impact but small enough for you to see the results of your leadership every day.

Collaboration is everything. You’ll be part of a passionate team where no task is too big or too small and where your ideas can shape the organisations next chapter.

What you’ll be doing

As Business Services Director, you will:

  • Lead financial strategy and sustainability to support growth plans.
  • Oversee corporate functions including HR, risk, governance, and policy.
  • Provide the CEO and Board with clear, actionable insights (no jargon!)
  • Partner with external providers to keep financial operations seamless.
  • Drive process improvements and modernise systems for better outcomes.

This is a hands-on leadership role with significant strategic influence, offering the opportunity to modernise systems, shape culture, and elevate business performance.

What we are looking for

To be successful in this role you will bring:

  • CPA/CA qualification and deep financial management expertise.
  • Proven success in senior hands on roles spanning finance, risk, governance, or corporate services.
  • A knack for turning complex financial data into plain-English insights.
  • A contemporary, people-focused leadership style that fosters inclusion and collaboration.
  • Passion for the performing arts, community impact, and organisational growth.
  • Experience in the not-for-profit, arts, or government sectors will be highly regarded.

Ready to take centre stage?

This is your chance to combine big-picture strategy with hands-on leadership, and make a real difference in an organisation that thrives on creativity, connection and community.
